Zebra Man, 2019, Ceramic, 10" in length
Why are women seen as domestic creatures while men are free to do what they please? Why have horses become domesticated while zebras, who are so closely related, are free roam wild? The answer to the second question is that Zebras, unlike horses, are well-adapted to their environment. Horses, who were first domesticated in Ukraine, never had to face the predators zebras do in the African Savanna. Thanks to their big cat predators, zebras have adapted to protect themselves with incredibly strong kick and a nasty bite, making them impossible to tame. If the reason zebras stayed wild is simply because they were able to adapt, is the same true between the sexes? Are men just too wild to be tamed? Are women are just naturally docile? No, but it is too often that these excuses justify the behavior of men vs. the suppression of women. In this piece I switched the roles. The man is the domesticated yet provocatively posed model in this spin on a porcelain trinket-esque figurine.
